Asm. Jerry Hill Works to Retain and Recruit Biotech Firms in California

To help keep biotech firms in California, Assembly Member Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) on Friday held a press conference announcing his proposal to create a state director of California biotechnology retention and recruitment position within the governor’s office. Other speakers at the event included CHI members Pierre Cassigneul, president and chief executive officer, XDx, Inc., and Paul Hastings, president and CEO, OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, as well as Gail Maderis, acting CEO of BayBio. With nearly 274,000 biomedical employees, California is one of the world’s leading biotech hubs but remains at risk of losing these high-wage jobs to other states and nations. Hastings said states such as Massachusetts, Florida and Utah have already lured many biotech firms with attractive incentives. The new position is designed to keep California as the premier destination for biomedical companies to foster innovation and bring much-needed medical treatments to the patients who need them.
