Submitted on: 01.30.2008

Legislators on the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing yesterday to discuss a recent report, produced at the request of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Andrew C. von Eschenbach, that discusses the current fiscal challenges facing the agency.  Among the report's findings: the agency's computer systems are antiquated; its quality of science is lacking ; its morale is poor; and it is failing to protect consumers from the onrush of pharmaceutical ingredients and foodstuffs streaming in from overseas.  Several congressmen at the hearing shared concerns for the agency and highlighted the need for more resources.
